Heimdall provides the ability to halt processing on application servers, wait for transactions to complete, swap active connections to a new database, then restart processing a few moments later, without having to restart the applications themselves.  As many applications can take many seconds to minutes to restart, this simple function can save a significant amount of downtime without noticeably impacting customer availability.
